The Storyteller's Apprentice
An illuminated novel by Dana Kumerow
with illustrations by Brittany Tate and Jen Walls
Everything has a name. Everything has a story.
In Loden, coming of age means becoming an apprentice. Though all of the villagers expect Arella’s sister to become the storyteller’s apprentice, it is Arella who is chosen.
When Arella is forced to leave her childhood home and face her biggest fears, she follows an unexpected path of adventure, hardship, and enchantment. She learns to appreciate the power in a name and the importance of sharing stories. Along the way, Arella accepts her own talents and learns to see the beauty and the magic around her.
All she had to do was LISTEN.
Dana Kumerow’s stories bring to life art concepted
by Brittany Tate and Jen Walls.
Telling one story begins by listening to another.
Hardcover Collector's Edition and Softcover Edition available here.
Art by Jen Walls. Poetry by Mary W. Cox
Years ago at a gallery crawl, I met an incredible woman. Tiny, with sparkling eyes and a quick wit, she enchanted me. I didn't know her and she didn't know me. And yet our creative spirits called out to each other and then ran off to play together like lifelong friends. I believe this book was born in that first magical meeting when the universe winked at us.
Our lives are separated by miles of highway and disparate stages, and still we found a way to play. Our canvas was Facebook, which we painted with pictures and words at odd hours and on staggered days. I'd post a painting, then she would post a haiku to illustrate the painting. And one of those little masterpieces moved me so much - it became my creative mantra and the perfect introduction to my art:
Here's the blue wild, where
tiny dreamers ride beasts, speak
bird-song, hold the moon
Between these pages lie thirty-three paintings and their poetic illustrations. A wild outpouring of exuberance blended with a little philosophy and a nudge- nudge wink- wink of humor. It is what happens when creative spirits meld and inner children come out to play. We are tickled. We are delighted. We hope you will be, too.

The #100 Love Notes Project
By Hyong Yi. Illustrated by 17 artists, including Jen Walls
Available on Amazon.
Flying socks, Spanish anchovies, origami butterflies, and tarot cards comprise just a small part of the collaborative efforts that produced 100 Love Notes, the book. Here, author Hyong Yi and the 17 artists he commissioned to illustrate his 100 three-line poems share some of the insights behind their work. Together, they have illuminated a story that captured the hearts of people around the world, giving it even greater meaning and purpose.
The initial version of Hyong Yi's 100 Love Notes was launched on the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina on November 21, 2015. To honor his wife, Catherine Zanga, on the one-year anniversary of her death from ovarian cancer, Hyong and his two young children gave strangers 100 handwritten love notes, notes that chronicled Hyong and Catherine’s life together, from their first meeting, to dating, marriage, children, and her death, which came far too soon.
